Digital spaces seem to be the only path to recreate these dynamics (though the modern drug soaked electronic music festival seems to be filling one of the old niches). Large group political experiments on Minecraft are a recent example that stands out.

Definitely - re: Minecraft, that's a great example.

The modern music festival is all dionysian and no apollonian (all play, no serious play) and thus fails to have any socio-political implications (I guess early Burning Man might be an exception, but that's not really a music festival I suppose). Some kind of spiritual or moral framing seems necessary to elevate the festival to something beyond pure hedonistic celebration.
