Is 'Around the turn of the 18th century' around 1700 or is it around 1800?

So I thought it would be around 1700 (still very early on in the hypothetical Order of the Phoenix), but I see how it is unclear... going to add a parenthetical to clarify :)

Interesting, and I like the idea of Mars being an N=2 for lots of Earth-cultural phenomena, but I wonder how the Martian community would be able to resist the entropic stance of maintaining dependence on Earth. If the colonization of the western hemisphere by white people is any indication, the new colony / community might never be able to be a true N=2 due to cultural ties to the "old country" (we're still obsessing about the british royals here in the USA!). Also, personal prejudices will still be inside people's hearts - latent bigotry might unintentionally sabotage the whole thing. Still, a very intriguing idea. Thanks for writing!

Thanks for reading! Founder effects will be very strong - hopefully the first colonizers would be a very culturally/psychologically diverse group of people who all believe in the mission to forge a new martian culture that is not beholden Earth culture in anyway. Perhaps the fact it's a different planet vs. just a different hemisphere will make it psychologically easier to have a clean break from Earth, but who am I kidding, it will probably end exactly like european colonization did lol.
